Good interior design isn’t just about sourcing the most beautiful pieces of furniture and choosing the perfect colour palettes for your living spaces. You also need to spare a thought for how you want to lay the rooms out so that they’re both stylish and practical at the same time.
Prioritising good layout is particularly important in the bedroom, as you want to make sure that you’re doing all you can to facilitate quality sleep on a regular basis.
You might not believe that what your bedroom looks like could have an impact on the level of rest you get each night - but you’d be surprised! So, with this in mind, here are just a couple of top tips from the Space Modern team to help you design the perfect bedroom layout. Have a play around and see what a difference it could make!
The biggest item in your bedroom will most likely be the bed, so it’s advisable to decide where to put this first before you consider other home furnishings.
If you’re able to, position your bed so that it’s in the middle of the longest wall, as this will make it the focal point and draw you into the room. Once the bed is in place, you can then lay the rest of the furniture out around it, as evenly spaced as you can.
Bedrooms usually have relatively chunky pieces of furniture in them, with beds, wardrobes and closets, dressing tables and side tables. There’s a lot that you can bring in, but make sure that you take the size of the room into account when deciding what pieces to introduce, so that you don’t compromise on the amount of floor space you have.
You don’t want to feel cramped and hedged in, and you want to make sure that you’ve got more than enough space to walk around easily without any obstructions getting in the way.
Symmetry can make your bedroom feel very harmonious, which is ideal for helping you sleep well at night. The good news is that it’s very easy to achieve visual balance in this space, particularly if you use the bed as your focal point.
Position bedside tables either side of the bed, adding to the look with lamps on each one. Don’t forget about the bed itself either, using the same pillows and bed linen to create a cohesive look.
It can be difficult to visualise how you want a room to look if you’re just using your mind’s eye - but luckily we have a huge amount of technology at our disposal these days. Using floor planner software can help you bring your ideas to life, allowing you to play around with different ideas before you commit to any one way of working.
